Paul has hat-trick in loss to Laval
Nick Paul had a hat-trick but the Belleville Senators were beaten 4-3 by the Laval Rocket Saturday at the Yardmen Arena.
Marcus Hogberg made 26 saves for Belleville while Ben Sexton had three assists. Daniel Audette, David Broll, Jeremy Gregoire and Markus Eisenschmid scored for Laval while Zach Fucale turned aside 27 shots.
With Belleville holding a 3-2 lead heading into the final 20 minutes, the Rocket scored twice to sneak out a victory. Gregoire tied the game at 3-3 4:26 into the frame as he buried Michael McCarron’s centering pass before Eisenschmid scored the game-winner 2:32 later as he redirected Eric Gelinas’ point shot.
Down 1-0 heading into the second, Belleville found its equalizer through Paul’s first of the night as he found a puck in close and roofed it to beat Fucale just 1:33 in.
But Laval would storm back and take the lead for the second time on Broll’s redirect on a centering feed from Thomas Ebbing to beat Hogberg five-hole only 1:29 later.
But again Belleville would soldier on and tie the game once again through Paul as he bagged his ninth of the year as Ben Sexton’s shot took a deflection that Fucale couldn’t hold onto and Paul cleaned it up for his ninth of the season at 11:30.
And Paul completed his hat-trick at 17:56 as he converted Sexton’s centering pass for a 3-2 Belleville lead on an odd-man rush.
Laval would grab the only goal of the opening period through Audette’s 13th of the season of a soft wrister from the blue line that seemed to evade Hogberg at 3:54.
Paul’s hat-trick was the third in Senators history and took just 16:23 to complete, the fast in Sens history. Sens defenceman Jordan Murray played in his 50th career AHL game.
Belleville is back in action on Feb. 27 as they play their first Tuesday game of the year as the Binghamton Devils visit the Yardmen Arena for the final match-up of the season between the two teams. Tickets are available by clicking here.
