Rocket cling on for win over Senators

Eric Gelinas scored twice for the Laval Rocket as they hung on for a 4-3 win over the Belleville Senators at the Yardmen Arena.

Jim O’Brien, Max McCormick and Jack Rodewald scored for the Senators while Andrew Hammond made 35 saves in his third straight start. Laval also had goals from Niki Petti and Kyle Baun while Michael McNiven turned aside 23 shots.

Trailing 4-1 in the third, the Sens started a furious comeback as McCormick’s fifth of the season cut the Rocket lead to 4-2 with 8:44 to play in regulation before Rodewald wacked in a loose puck with 6:07 left for his sixth of the year but Belleville could not find an equalizer.

Laval took a 1-0 lead at 13:39 as Petti jumped out of the penalty box to beat Hammond glove side for his fourth goal of the year.

The Rocket doubled its lead at 16:05 through Gelinas as his slap shot from the right face-off circle beat Hammond on the power play.

After a strong start to the third period by the Sens, they fell further behind as Baun’s third of the year made it 3-0 at 5:02.

The Sens found life though with 1:09 left in the second as O’Brien finished off Max McCormick’s centering pass for his eighth goal of the campaign.

Gelinas had his second of the game at 5:06 of the third on the power play on a near carbon copy of his first goal as his slap shot found its way past Hammond.

McCormick registered his 100th career point, and 50th assist, while Andreas Englund played in his 100th career AHL game. The Sens dropped to 1-3 against the Rocket this season.

Belleville is back in action Saturday night at the Yardmen as they welcome the Providence Bruins for their only visit of the season. Less than 400 tickets are available and remaining seats can be purchased by clicking here.
