Rocket use big first period to beat Senators

The Laval Rocket scored three times in the first period as they beat the Belleville Senators 4-0 Saturday night at the Yardmen Arena.

Laval had goals from Adam Cracknell (2), Markus Eisenschmid and Matt Taormina while Charlie Lindgren made 25 saves. Marcus Hogberg turned aside 38 shots in the Belleville goal.

The Rocket jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on the back of two goals from Cracknell. He opened the scoring at 6:26 as he tipped in Eric Gelinas’ point shot on the power play before Eisenschmid made it 2-0 at 12:16 as he wacked a puck out of the air after Hogberg had made the initial stop.

Laval made it 3-0 3:02 later through Cracknell’s second of the period as he showed great patience on the man advantage by outwaiting Hogberg and sweeping the puck under him as a Sens defenceman slid across the ice.

After a scoreless second period, the Rocket pushed its lead to 4-0 at 5:11 of the third through Taormina’s fourth of the year on the power play.

Sens captain Mike Blunden played in his 550th career AHL game while Chris DiDomenico played in his 100th.

The Senators return to action Wednesday as they host the Manitoba Moose at the Yardmen. Tickets are available by clicking here.
