Werek scores shootout winner as Sens beat Devils
Ethan Werek scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Belleville Senators beat the Binghamton Devils 3-2 Friday night.
Werek scored in sudden death as the Sens’ fourth shooter as he delayed his shot before beating Eddie Lack in the Binghamton goal.
Danny Taylor stopped 36 shots in the Belleville goal while Nick Paul and Macoy Erkamps scored. Steven Santini and Jason MacDonald had goals for the Devils as Lack made 29 saves.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the third period, Belleville tied the game through Erkamps’ first career AHL goal as his shot from the blue line deflected off of a Devils player and past Lack at 3:02 to make it a 2-2 game.
Binghamton took a 1-0 lead with six minutes left in the first period on Santini’s first goal of the season as his shot from the blue beat a screened Taylor.
But it took Belleville just 1:37 to tie as Paul re-directed Ben Harpur’s point shot past Lack for his second goal in as many games. The goal came on the power play after Lack had been penalized for slashing Jim O’Brien after a whistle.
The Senators thought they had a 2-1 lead with 7:24 left in the second as Gabriel Gagne tipped in Erik Burgdoerfer’s long shot but it was disallowed for goaltender interference.
The Devils would then take the lead through MacDonald as he found a loose puck in the goal crease on the man advantage at 14:29 of the second frame.
Ben Sexton returned to the Sens line-up after missing the last 32 games due to injury while Pat Sieloff played in his first game since Dec. 30.
Belleville is back in action Saturday as they play the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for the first time this season. The Senators return home Feb. 9 to host the Toronto Marlies and a very limited amount of tickets are available by clicking here.
