Haggerty scores hat-trick as Penguins beat Senators

Ryan Haggerty scored a hat-trick as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins beat the Belleville Senators 4-2 Friday night at the Yardmen Arena.

Belleville had goals from Colin White (2) while Marcus Hogberg made 10 saves before being pulled in the second in favour of Danny Taylor, who stopped 16 shots. Christian Thomas, Garrett Wilson and Jean-Sebastien Dea also scored for the Penguins as Anthony Peters made 19 saves.

Haggerty opened the scoring 5:04 into the game on a weak wrister from the right wing that eluded Hogberg but the Senators got a quick response as White notched his first of the night at 9:47 after he buried Max McCormick’s centering pass.

The visitors struck in quick fashion twice in the second period as Haggerty’s second of the night at 3:38 restored the visitors’ lead before Thomas, who was just named to Canada’s 2018 Olympics roster, extended the advantage to 3-1 1:45 later. Hogberg was pulled after giving up his third goal.

White’s second of the night came on the power play as he hammered home Filip Chlapik’s pass on the one-timer with 3:12 left in the frame.

Haggerty completed the hat-trick with a wrister from the slot as he skated down the left wing before cutting inside and firing past Taylor at 5:12 of the third before Wilson scored from the goal line on the power play with 5:43 to play. Dea added an empty-netter at 17:10 after icing was waived off.

The game marked the first multi-goal game of White’s professional career. Andrey Pedan, Kevin Czuczman and Zach Ashton-Reese each had two assists for the Penguins.

The Senators return to action Saturday as they host the Hartford Wolf Pack on Star Wars night. All fans in attendance will also receive a free Senators poster/calendar upon exit. Tickets are available by clicking here.
