Sens beat Rocket in preseason opener



The Belleville Senators won its preseason opener after beating the Laval Rocket 3-1 at Place Bell Saturday afternoon.

Max Lajoie had a goal and an assist while Danny Taylor made 21 saves in the Belleville goal. Laval got a goal from Brett Lernout while Michael McNiven stopped 24 shots.

Jim O’Brien scored the game-winner at 15:20 of the second period as he redirected Lajoie’s point shot. Filip Chlapik sealed the deal with an empty-net goal at 19:52 of the third.

The Rocket opened the scoring just 3:28 in through Lenout on the power play as the Sens had both Christian Jaros and Mike Blunden in the box.

The Senators came close to tying the game as Jaros’ one-timer came off the crossbar but Belleville finally found their equalizer on the power play with 2:04 left in the period as Lajoie’s wrister found its way through traffic past McNiven.

The game was delayed for an extended period in the second due to an issue with the glass behind one of the goals. The delay resulted in the players leaving the ice until the issue was resolved.

The two teams will do battle again Sunday at 3pm from Place Bell in the their final preseason encounter. The two teams will then square off again next Friday in the regular season opener at 7:30pm.
