Belleville Sens earn decisive win over Monsters

April 9, 2023

The Belleville Senators completed their season series against the Cleveland Monsters with a crucial 3-1 win on Saturday night at CAA Arena.

With the victory, the Senators now sit only two points behind the Laval Rocket for the fifth and final Calder Cup playoff position in the North Division with three games left in the regular season. While Cleveland is now just a single point ahead of Belleville.

Cleveland opened the scoring when Mikael Pyyhtia capitalized on a rebound to get the visitors on the board at the 12:39 mark of the first period. Less than a minute later, the Senators equalized through Jake Lucchini as he collected his 18th of the campaign.

In the second, veteran defenceman Jacob Larsson found the back of the net with a seeing-eye shot to give the Senators a 2-1 lead after forty minutes.

A strong defensive effort throughout the final frame and an empty-net tally from Cole Cassels with under a minute to play in regulation time would help to secure the Belleville win.

The Senators return to action next Friday night when they visit the Rochester Americans for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop from Blue Cross Arena.
