Belleville Sens hire Nathan McIver as assistant coach

July 4, 2023

The Belleville Senators announced today that Nathan McIver has been hired as an assistant coach. He will join head coach David Bell and his staff, which includes assistant coach Ben Sexton, goaltending coach Justin Peters and video coach Frederic Lemay.

McIver, 38, enters the organization after a two-year stint as an assistant coach for the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL, where he helped lead the team to appearances in the Eastern Conference finals in both the 2022 and 2023 Kelly Cup playoffs. Prior to his time in Newfoundland, he spent four seasons with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 2016-2020, where he began his coaching career as an assistant with the franchise.

“Nathan is someone I’ve known for a long time. I’ve always been impressed with how high character of a person he is,” said Belleville Senators general manager Ryan Bowness. “When I played against him, he was always a highly competitive player and he has transitioned that same drive effectively to his coaching career. I’m extremely excited to have him on board. He will have a key role in helping develop our prospects both as people and players.

“Nathan has a vast experience in the AHL as a player and will be a great asset in sharing his experiences and knowledge to our defencemen,” said Belleville Senators head coach David Bell. “His reputation as a human being is second to none.”

As a player, the native of Summerside, Prince Edward Island went on to appear in eleven seasons of professional hockey, after he was selected in the eighth round (254th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks.

In total, McIver skated in 36 career National Hockey League (NHL) contests with the Canucks (2006-08) and Anaheim Ducks (2008-09). He is also a veteran of 508 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Manitoba Moose (2005-10), Providence Bruins (2010-12), Bridgeport Sound Tigers (2012-13), Hamilton Bulldogs (2013-14) and Norfolk Admirals (2014-15). He finished his playing career with the Braehead Clan of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) during the 2015-16 season.

Belleville Senators season seat memberships, group experiences and Business Elite memberships for the 2023-24 season are all currently on sale, with more information available via the Belleville Sens website.
