Game Day Build-Up: Atlantic Division trip continues as Sens battle Pens

February 25, 2023

Presented by Carpenters Union Local 397
Feb.25/23 @ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (NHL Affiliate: Pittsburgh Penguins)

The Set-Up:

The Belleville Senators are hoping to leave a tough result in Bridgeport behind them, as they continue their three-game road trip through the Atlantic Division tonight. A morning skate injury added another goaltender to the injured list, in the form of Kevin Mandolese, and a surprise first pro start for Queen’s Gael’s standout Luke Richardson didn’t fit the script the Sens were hoping. Tonight, another new backstop slides between the pipes and hopes to give Belleville a chance to pick-up some crucial points against a tired bunch of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who are coming off a 3-2 loss on the road last night.

Previous History:

As is the case with many of Belleville’s Atlantic Division opponents, the lifetime series between the Sens and Pens is a short one, with the two teams only tangling five times in their history. Belleville has a 2-3-0-0 lifetime record against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, with a 1-1-0-0 mark at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Belleville won their meeting earlier this season 3-1 back at CAA Arena.

Roster Notes:

Goaltending continues to be the area of focus, in terms of roster changes, with another new netminder joining the fold today. Dylan Ferguson was acquired from the Toronto Marlies on Friday and is expected to start tonight against the Penguins. Additionally, the Ottawa Senators made a swap of forwards, recalling Mark Kastelic from Belleville and returning Ridly Greig to the AHL. More lineup details will be available closer to puck drop.

Who to Watch:

Senators defender Lassi Thomson has been chipping in a fair bit offensively lately and has points in back-to-back games (two assists). Despite not registering a point, John Quenneville had four shots on goal Thursday night in Bridgeport, while Egor Sokolov has three points (two goals, one assist) in his last four games, including an assist on Thursday.

The Penguins are paced by European speedsters Alexander Nylander (46 points) and Valtteri Puustinen (44 points), each had a goal and an assist in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Friday night loss in Syracuse. Nylander, brother of Toronto Maple Leafs star William, is riding a six-game point streak into tonight (four goals, four assists), while Puustinen has 10 points (five goals, five assists) over his last seven games.
