Game Day Build-Up: Belleville Sens look for weekend sweep of Monsters

March 19, 2023

Presented by Carpenters Union Local 397
Mar.19/23 @ Cleveland Monsters (NHL Affiliate: Columbus Blue Jackets)

The Set-Up:

With points in seven straight games, including a crucial 4-1 win in Cleveland last night, the Belleville Senators are one of the hottest teams in the American Hockey League. They’ll need to keep playing that way if they want to improve their chances of clinching Calder Cup Playoff berth, as they wrap the road portion of their season series with the Monsters at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse this afternoon. The Senators were victorious in a physical playoff-style affair last night, which saw four different players find the score sheet and Dylan Ferguson make 34 saves. They’ll have to be prepared for another grueling afternoon contest, with the Monsters still trying to make up some ground in the race for the postseason.

Previous History:

Saturday night’s win improved Belleville’s record against Cleveland this season to 2-3-0-0 and ups the lifetime record to a just about even 10-10-0-1. Belleville is now 5-6-0-0 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in 11 visits to Cleveland.

Roster Notes:

Given the recent success the Senators have seen, Interim Head Coach David Bell isn’t planning on tinkering too much with his lineup this afternoon. He will, however, have to make a change in net after Dylan Ferguson has earned his first National Hockey League recall, being brought up by Ottawa this morning. Kevin Mandolese was returned to Belleville in the same transaction but isn’t expected to be in Cleveland this afternoon. Antoine Bibueau will likely make his first start since Family Day. He’ll be backed up by Luke Richardson.

Who to Watch:

The Senators were able to spread out the scoring on Saturday night, with Roby Jarventie extending his point streak to five games (four goals, one assist), Matt Wedman snapping a five-game pointless sterak, Max Guenette notching another power play goal, and newcomer (and former Monster) Mitchell Heard scoring his first as a Senator, against his former club. Cole Cassels extended his point streak to three games and has seven assists over that span, while Jake Lucchini also had four shots on goal, despite not finding the back of the net.

Forward Owen Sillinger was the only Monster to score on Saturday, while defender David Jiricek extended his point streak to three games, adding an assist on that marker. All-Star defender Jake Christiansen had five shots on goal. The Senators were also able to keep Trey Fix-Wolansky under wraps, as his seven-game point streak was halted (four goals, six assists), though he did have five shots on goal.
