Game Day Build-Up: Sens conclude Atlantic Division trip with visit to Hershey

February 26, 2023

Presented by Carpenters Union Local 397
Feb.26/23 @ Hershey Bears (NHL Affiliate: Washington Capitals)

The Set-Up:

After holding off the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a 2-1 overtime win on Saturday night, the Belleville Sens will conclude their three-game Atlantic Division road swing in another tough environment as they visit the Hershey Bears at Giant Center this afternoon. Cole Reinhardt was the OT hero Saturday, scoring just under 2:00 into the extra frame, while newly acquired netminder Dylan Ferguson stopped a career-high 38 shots to earn the win in his Belleville debut. The Bears are also coming off an extra-time victory, beating Lehigh Valley 4-3 in a shootout at home last night.

Previous History:

Today’s matchup is the 10th all-time between the Sens and Bears, with Belleville holding a 3-5-1-0 lifetime record against Hershey. Despite what is usually a raucous and hostile crowd at Giant Center, the Sens have skated to a 2-1-0-1 mark in Hershey. This season, Hershey has a 1-0 advantage in the two-game season series after earning a 4-2 win at CAA Arena back on January 21.

Roster Notes:

With Angus Crookshank and Jayce Hawryluk both suffering injuries yesterday and being listed as day-to-day, the Senators have called-in forward Max Newton from the nearby Reading Royals of the ECHL. Newton, who played with Jake Lucchini in junior, has been putting up some pretty good numbers with Reading this season, putting up 52 points (23 goals, 29 assists) in 48 games. Due to that change, the Sens are expected to roll with 11 forwards and seven defence, with Xavier Bernard drawing back in on the blue line. Kevin Mandolese will return between the pipes with Dylan Ferguson backing him up.

Who to Watch:

The Sens will celebrate a trio of milestones this afternoon, as Captain Dillon Heatherington and forward Cole Cassels each play their 400th American Hockey League games, and John Quenneville plays his 200th. Fans will also want to keep an eye on Lassi Thomson again as the slick-skating defender tries to extend his three-game point streak (three assists). Jake Lucchini had an assist last night and has registered seven points (two goals, five assists) in his last five games played, with his next point moving him into sole possession of third place on Belleville’s all-time points list.

High-flying rookie all-star Ethen Frank brings a three-game point streak (two goals, one assist) into today’s game, as does veteran forward Mike Sgarbossa (two goals, three assists). To add to his streak, Frank has 10 multi-point games this season, including when the Sens and Bears last met, with the Papillon, Nebraska native scoring twice in their last meeting.
