Game Day Build-Up: Sens and Marlies renew hostilities at CAA Arena

January 20, 2023

Presented by Carpenters Union Local 397
Jan.20/23 vs Toronto Marlies (NHL Affiliate: Toronto Maple Leafs)

The Set-Up:

Just two sleeps after another thrilling edition of the Battle of Ontario on Wednesday, the Belleville Sens and Toronto Marlies will renew hostilities at CAA Arena again tonight. Despite a pair of goals from Matt Boucher and a milestone first AHL marker by Kyle Betts for Belleville, former Sens captain Logan Shaw stole the show and helped Toronto to a 6-5 shootout win. Tonight, the Sens will try to replicate that offensive output and find a way to put the breaks on the Marlies six-game heater.

Previous History:

Tonight’s matchup is the 62nd all-time meeting between Belleville and Toronto, with the Sens holding a 30-26-2-3 record over the lifetime series. At CAA Arena over that span, Belleville is 12-16-0-2 against Toronto, including Wednesday’s shootout loss. That defeat dropped the Sens record in the season series to 2-3-0-1.

Roster Notes:

The top headline up front for Belleville another return of forward Viktor Lodin, who missed Wednesday’s game with the flu and had had multiple spells on the injured list through the first half of the season. He’ll rejoin Ridly Greig and Egor Sokolov on the top line. Brennan Saulnier makes way for Lodin’s return, as he’ll be the only healthy scratch. Jake Lucchini will drop down to play alongside Angus Crookshank and Jayce Hawryluk, with no changes to the bottom-six forwards or defence pairings. Kevin Mandolese will make his second consecutive start in net, after making 35 saves on 40 shots two days ago. He’ll be backed up by Alex Horawski, who will dress again on an emergency basis once again.

Who to Watch:

Though he didn’t find the net, Jake Lucchini was certainly noticeable in his return from the NHL on Wednesday. The 27-year-old had five shots on goal and helped to create some chances and momentum in his regular power play role. Cole Cassels has been leading by example as well of late, he brings a five-game point streak (one goal, five assists) into tonight’s contest.

While Logan Shaw’s six-game point streak (five goals, 10 assists) has lived up to his All-Star selection, Nick Abruzzese has been hot on his heels. Abruzzese is on a five-game point streak of his own (three goals, six assists), including a goal and an assist, plus four shots on goal on Wednesday. Goaltender Joseph Woll is unbeaten this season (10-0-0), while Keith Petruzzelli and Erik Khällgren have each won their last two starts in net.
