Game Day Build-Up: B-Sens begin back-to-back with Amerks at CAA Arena

March 1, 2024

Belleville Sens Game Day Build-Up
Mar.1/24 vs Rochester Americans (NHL Affiliate: Buffalo Sabres)

The Set-Up:

A three-game divisional homestand continues for the Belleville Senators tonight as they play their first of back-to-back games at CAA Arena against the Rochester Americans. The B-Sens enter the final 20 games of the American Hockey League regular season on a four-game win streak, most recently, their 3-0 shutout at home to the Utica Comets on Wednesday night. The hot stretch has Belleville sitting alone in third place coming into tonight’s game, three points clear of the fifth place Amerks and four points back of Syracuse in second. The Senators will look for another full 60-minute effort tonight against the Amerks, who they beat twice on the road last week, and have lost four straights games including a 5-2 home defeat to Syracuse on Wednesday.

Previous History:

Tonight’s matchup is the fifth of eight between Belleville and Rochester this season, with the Senators earning at least a point in all four games so far (3-0-0-1). Belleville’s only defeat against the Amerks came in the season series opener, a shootout loss at CAA Arena, while Belleville has also won in a shootout at Blue Cross Arena and earned a regulation win each at home and on the road. Lifetime against the Amerks, the B-Sens are 22-10-5-1 and 9-5-4-1 on home ice.

Roster Notes:

No transactions between Belleville and Ottawa have been announced as of publication time this morning, but there could be some movement through the day, with the NHL Senators suffering some injuries this week and getting set to host the Arizona Coyotes at Canadian Tire Centre tonight. Any moves will be announced via the Senators’ social media feeds (@BellevilleSens). Full lineup details including tonight’s alignment will be available prior to puck drop.

Who to Watch:

Power forward Jiri Smejkal didn’t play on Wednesday against Utica but has points in his last three games (three assists). 6’4’’, 223 pounder from Czechia has four assists in four games against Rochester this season and will look to use his size and skill to create more opportunities for the Senators around the net. Meanwhile, Angus Crookshank (two goals, one assist), Egor Sokolov (two assists), and Max Guenette (one goal, two assists) all have points in back-to-back games.

Buffalo first-rounder Jiri Kulich (28th overall in 2022) has been the hottest Amerk of late, picking up a point in four consecutive games (one goal, three assists), though he’s had some gaps in games played due to a recent injury and NHL recall. Speedster Linus Weissbach has been the best-performing Amerks player against Belleville this season, registering four points (one goal, three assists), in four games so far. Mason Jobst is also on a four-game point streak (three goals, one assist).
