Game Day Build-Up: B-Sens stop in Syracuse as playoff push continues

March 15, 2024

Belleville Sens Game Day Build-Up
Mar.15/24 @ Syracuse Crunch (NHL Affiliate: Tampa Bay Lightning)

The Set-Up:

The countdown to the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs continues and as the Belleville Senators enter the final 15 games of the regular season, they find themselves staring down a gauntlet of divisional games which will no doubt have a significant impact on the final standings. That run of 12 games inside the North Division begins tonight in Syracuse, against a Crunch team that had streaked its way to a brief stay atop the table and is just two points shy of overtaking the Cleveland monsters again. The Senators need to continue to collect points as they did with a win against the Utica Comets at home on Wednesday, to keep the pressure on the teams directly around them, Rochester ahead by one point and Toronto behind by two.

Previous History:

The Senators have skated to a perfect 5-0-0-0 record against the Crunch so far this season, with three games remaining in the season series. While Belleville holds an impressive 12-6-0-0 lifetime record against Syracuse at CAA Arena, they’ve made also big strides away from home this season, picking up a pair of wins already and improving their lifetime away mark versus the crunch to 6-9-2-2. Overall in their history against the Crunch, the B-Sens are 17-15-2-2.

Roster Notes:

The American Hockey League trade deadline passes at 3:00 p.m ET. today, so Belleville Sens General Manager Ryan Bowness and his staff have their final chance to make any last-minute changes ahead of the playoff push, should they choose to. Players traded before today’s AHL deadline are cleared to play once the Calder Cup Playoffs begin, however, they will be ineligible to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs should they be recalled before the end of the National Hockey League Season. The Senators did sign forward Orrin Centazzo to a professional tryout this morning. Centazzo has 47 points (17 goals, 30 assists) in 47 games with the ECHL Toledo Walleye this season and also scored once for Belleville during a four-game PTO earlier on this season. Stay tuned to the Belleville Sens social media channels (@BellevilleSens) for the latest updates. Full lineup information, including tonight’s alignment, will be available before puck drop.

Who to Watch:

Back after two games off, Angus Crookshank once again made an immediate impact for the Senators. The team’s leading scorer notched the game-winning goal and had four shots on net in Wednesday’s win against Utica, extending his point streak to five games four goals, two assists. Josh Currie picked up an assist on Wednesday and has points in four straight games (one goal, three assists). Mads Sogaard also became Belleville’s winningest goaltender, picking up his 46th victory on Wednesday and passing Filip Gustavsson to claim the franchise goaltending wins record.

This will be the first time that the Senators have to play the Crunch with Alex Barre-Boulet in the lineup. The former American Hockey League Rookie of the Year and two-time all-star (among other accolades) was returned from the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 23 and has eight points (two goals, six assists) in eight games since then. Barre-Boulet has led the Crunch in scoring against Belleville in three consecutive seasons, putting up 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) in 23 career games against the B-Sens.
