Game Day Build-Up: Belleville Sens return to CAA Arena to kick off three-game homestand against Utica

February 28, 2024

Belleville Sens Game Day Build-Up
Feb.28/24 vs Utica Comets (NHL Affiliate: New Jersey Devils)

The Set-Up:

The Belleville Senators may be back home from their six-point sweep in New York State last week, but they’ll get another dose of opponents from just across the border again this week, starting tonight against the Utica Comets. The Senators begin the new week sitting in third place in the North Division, following a pair of wins in Rochester and a victory in Syracuse last week and will need to continue with their strong form as we head into the final 20 games of the season. With 18 of 21 games remaining against divisional opponents, the Sens will look to further distance themselves from the Comets at the bottom of the standings, while also extending their one-point gap on the Rochester Americans, who visit CAA Arena for two games later this week.

Previous History:

Belleville has the edge in the eight-game season series with the Comets, holding a record of 3-2-0-0, including a split of their two games earlier this season at CAA Arena, along with a pair of victories and a loss at Adirondack Bank Center, in Utica. Lifetime against the Comets, the Senators are 17-15-3-0, and 9-8-1-0 on home ice.

Roster Notes:

The NHL parent club in Ottawa did, unfortunately, suffer at least one injury in their game at Nashville on Tuesday night. Forward and Belleville Sens grad Josh Norris left the game against the Predators in the second period and didn’t return. However, there’s no word yet on if or how that might affect the roster here in Belleville. Full lineup details including tonight’s alignment will be available prior to puck drop.

Who to Watch:

While patrolling the blue line, Senators defenceman Jacob Larsson has also been a consistent contributor offensively as well, bringing a three-game point streak (one goal, two assists) into tonight’s game. Larsson has picked up a point in eight of his last 10 games (one goal, seven assists) and has already set new career highs in goals (six), assists (15), and points (21) in a season. Meanwhile, forward Garrett Pilon has points in back-to-back games (one goal, one assist) and has scored in all-but-three games dating back to January 20. He also has seven points (three goals, four assists) in four games against Utica this season.

Comets rookie Chase Stillman has been gaining some spotlight of late, most recently, after notching his first career hat trick in Syracuse last Sunday. The former first-round draft pick to the New Jersey Devils in 2021 (29th overall) has 17 points (10 goals, seven assists) over his first 41 professional games. He also has three points (two goals, one assist) in five games in the season series with Belleville. The son of long-time NHL star Cory Stillman and brother of Rochester Americans defenceman Riley, Stillman won an Ontario Hockey League Championship last season with the Peterborough Petes.
