Game Day Build-Up: Senators aim to extend streak, sweep weekend set with Griffins, on Teddy Bear Toss Night

December 9, 2023

Belleville Sens Game Day Build-Up
Dec.9/23 vs Grand Rapids Griffins (NHL Affiliate: Detroit Red Wings)

The Set-Up:

The temperature might be dropping as we move into December but the Belleville Senators are certainly heating up, having won three straight games, and earning points in five straight. The most recent victory was 5-2 over the visiting Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday. Five different Sens found the net, Leevi Merilainen put up a strong performance in net and the Belleville penalty kill was perfect in their first meeting with the Griffins since the 2019-20 season. The Senators will look to replicate that performance tonight and extend the streak, on Teddy Bear Toss night at CAA Arena.

Previous History:

The Sens’ Friday night win improves their overall lifetime record against the Griffins to 4-2-0-0 and 2-1-0-0 at home. Matthew Boucher, Egor Sokolov, Roby Jarventie, Josh Currie, and Max Guenette all scored for Belleville in the season series opener, while Leevi Merilainen made 24 saves on 26 shots. The Sens and Griffins will finish their four-game season series at Van Andel Arena, in Grand Rapids, Michigan in January.

Roster Notes:

There were no transactions for the Senators overnight. Full lineup details, including tonight’s alignment, will be available before puck drop.

Who to Watch:

Egor Sokolov (three goals) and Max Guenette (one goal, three assists) are the newest Senators to begin fresh point streaks, with each having points in the last three games. Garrett Pilon extended his point streak to five games (four goals, three assists) with a helper on Friday, and Roby Jarventie stretched his point streak to seven games (four goals, five assists) dating back to before his NHL recall. He’s had a point in all five games since his return from the NHL.

Griffins’ sharpshooter Taro Hirose saw his seven-game point streak come to an end last night (three goals, seven assists), but teammate Simon Edvinsson extended his point streak to seven (three goals, seven assists). Albert Johnasson now has points in back-to-back games (one goal, two assists), after notching an assist last night.

At the Rink:

Tonight’s game is the annual Teddy Bear Toss in support of the Belleville Firefighter’s Toy Drive. Fans can bring a new stuffed toy to the game, to toss on the ice when the Senators score their first goal, and the toys will be donated after the game. All fans who bring a toy will receive an entry into a draw for a VIP ticket experience at the Sens’ Fan Appreciation Game, on April 19, 2024. Fans can also take advantage of the Sens “Stay Warm Sale” at the Locker Room Store, with discounts on toques, mitts, scarves, and blankets. And all game-worn jerseys will be on sale at the rink this weekend as well.
