Game Day Build-Up: Senators begin new Battle of Ontario with double-dip against Marlies

October 27, 2023

Belleville Sens Game Day Build-Up
Oct.27/23 vs Toronto Marlies (NHL Affiliate: Toronto Maple Leafs)

The Set-Up:

A four-game homestand continues for the Belleville Senators tonight as they begin a back-to-back set with the Toronto Marlies, kicking off the 2023-24 AHL Battle of Ontario. The Sens are looking to bounce back from their first home loss of the season Wednesday, falling 4-1 to Milwaukee, and will hope to pick up some important early-season points against their provincial rivals. The Marlies also played Milwaukee in their last game, but with a better result than Belleville, earning a 3-2 win. That victory was Toronto’s second in a row, to finish off a season opening five-game homestand with a 3-1-1-0 record.

Previous History:

The Sens and Marlies have met 66 times over their very close lifetime series. Belleville has a slight advantage at 32-29-2-3 but are looking to improve their home record against Toronto, which sits at 13-17-0-2. Last season, the Senators skated to a 4-7-0-1 record against their provincial foes.

Roster Notes:

There haven’t been any new transactions between Ottawa and Belleville since Wednesday’s matchup with Milwaukee, but that could change. Ottawa defender Erik Brannstrom was injured in their game against the New York Islanders on Thursday night, so there’s a chance that another blueliner could be recalled to help support the NHL parent club. Full lineup information for tonight’s contest will be available prior to puck drop.

Who to Watch:

Rookie defenceman Tyler Kleven is the only Senator with points in consecutive games, or better. The 25-year-old from Fargo, North Dakota has assists in back-to-back games, as he finds his legs in the American Hockey League. Egor Sokolov had an assist on Wednesday against Milwaukee and has been buzzing offensively, despite only finding the back of the net once so far this season. The Sens all-time leading point-getter has registered six shots in each of his last two games.

The Marlies have two players riding four-game point streaks into tonight’s contest. Joseph Blandisi has six points (two goals, four assists) over that span, while Max Ellis has notched an assist in each of his last four games. Toronto’s lineup also boasts four players with points in back-to-back games, including Nick Abruzzese, Kyle Clifford, Alex Steeves, and Ryan Tverberg.

At the rink:

Tonight is Loyalist College Student and Alumni Night, as the Senators and Loyalist celebrate their partnership. Loyalist College students and alumni are eligible for a special ticket rate, with a link to purchase being circulated by the college.
