Game Day Build-Up: Senators look for response in matinee rematch with Monsters

November 12, 2023

Belleville Sens Game Day Build-Up
Nov.12/23 vs Cleveland Monsters (NHL Affiliate: Columbus Blue Jackets)

The Set-Up:

After a disappointing trip out against Cleveland on Friday night, the Belleville Senators will get another crack at the Monsters at CAA Arena this afternoon. The two North Division foes will tangle again, following Cleveland’s 4-2 win to start their mini set, in a game that had plenty of the signs of a rivalry matchup. While Cole Reinhardt and Josh Currie both scored for the Sens, it was too late to catch up, following four goals from Cleveland, by way of Kent Johnson (2), Brendan Gaunce, and Stanislav Svozil, plus a stellar performance in net from Jet Greaves. This afternoon, the Sens look to bring more energy out of the gate and try to get some payback, as they complete a three-game homestand.

Previous History:

Today’s matchup is the second-of-four between the Sens and Monsters this season, with Belleville traveling to Cleveland in mid-December. After Wednesday night’s loss, the Senators record against Cleveland over 25 lifetime meetings falls to 11-12-0-2, with a 6-5-0-2 mark at CAA Arena.

Roster Notes:

There’s been no roster movement for the Senators since Wednesday. Forwards Matt Highmore, Roby Jarventie, and Zack MacEwen all remain with the NHL club in Ottawa, as do defencemen Tyler Kleven and Jacob-Bernard Docker. The Senators will be without forwards Tarun Fizer, Tyler Boucher, Philippe Daoust and Brennan Saulner, as well as defenceman Donovan Sebrango, due to inury. Full lineup details will be available prior to puck drop.

Who to Watch:

Senators alternate captain Josh Currie has been impactful over the past couple of games, notching an assist and the shootout winner on Wednesday against Syracuse, before scoring again on Friday. The veteran forward from Charlottetown, PEI will look to continue to lead by example this afternoon, as the Sens try to turn things around from Friday.

2021 Columbus first round pick Kent Johnson turned heads at CAA Arena Friday with a pair of goals, putting him on a three-game point streak. Teammate Trey Fix-Wolansky extended his point streak Friday to seven games, and sits third in AHL scoring. Defender David Jiricek, the 6th overall pick by Columbus in 2022 was also returned to the Monsters this weekend, but it’s not clear yet if he’ll be in the lineup today.

At the rink:

Today is the first Sunday Fun Day of the season, featuring a family-friendly 2:00 p.m. start time, along with games and activities for younger Sens fans. Kids Zone activities include colouring and poster-making stations, a balloon animal artist and temporary tattoo station.
