Senators ground Rocket with 5-3 preseason win

October 9, 2021

It was a successful start to the 2021-22 preseason for the Belleville Senators after a 5-3 win over the Laval Rocket on Friday night at CAA Arena.

Rourke Chartier, Mitchell Hoelscher, Philippe Daoust, Matthew Wedman and Roby Jarventie all scored for the Senators, with Egor Sokolov adding a trio of assists.

Kevin Mandolese and Tyler Parks split the goaltending duties, with Mandolese stopping 24 of 26 shots against and Parks making seven saves on eight shots.

Corey Schueneman, Jake Lucchini and Lukas Vejdemo tallied for Laval and Kevin Poulin made 34 saves on 39 Belleville shots.

Senators Head Coach Troy Mann was pleased with the victory and effort put forward by his team.

“Certainly the work ethic and compete were there, which is obviously something we’re looking for from all of the guys. I thought there was some chemistry built as the game progressed and I think some of our go-to prospects got better as the game went on. Mandolese was good in net and made a couple big saves at important times. Overall it’s nice to get the first win out of the way and we’ll just build on that.”

The line of Sokolov, Daoust and Jarventie combined for seven points to pace the Belleville offence and Mann says that trend will have to continue for the team to be successful when the regular season begins.

“Our prospects and draft picks are the engine that drive the bus. If we want to have any success and make a push for the playoffs those will have to be our go-to guys. We wanted to put ownership on them that it’s their team, that’s why we named Sokolov and Reinhardt as alternate captains tonight.”

The Senators will practice on Saturday, before finishing off the short preseason schedule with a match up against the Toronto Marlies on Sunday afternoon.

With more than 30 players still on the roster, Mann is expecting to make a few line up changes before Sunday’s game.

“We have a number of guys that we’re hoping to get in, but it’s a fine line between getting guys in and not being rusty. We’re hoping to get Heatherington, Kastelic and Thompson in. From an injury standpoint we’ve got some guys who are day-to-day that we’d like to get a look at if they can play, and we’d like to get Sogaard in if he’s back from Ottawa. It won’t be a wholesale change, but we’ll probably make four-or-five changes.”

Game time Sunday is 4:00 p.m. with tickets available to Season Ticket Holders and fans who have purchased Flex Packs. Single game tickets go on sale on Tuesday October 12, 2021 and can be purchased by clicking here .
