Gabriel Pizza Gameday Build-Up: Belleville bring back-to-back wins into Syracuse to finish three-game trip

The set-up:

For the first time in a couple of weeks, the Belleville Senators woke up this morning to see themselves jump a spot in the North Division standings. Belleville’s 4-3 shootout win in Utica on Friday night has moved them from fifth to fourth, one point ahead of Toronto, one point behind Laval, and just three points from the division lead, shared by the Rochester Americans and tonight’s opponent, the Syracuse Crunch. The Senators come into Syracuse having won seven of their last 10 games, including an emphatic road win against the Crunch two weeks ago, and can sweep this week’s three-game New York State road trip with another victory tonight. The Crunch are trying to get back to the form they had a couple of weeks ago, when they had won seven of eight games, after, as they’ve recently lost four of their last six.

Previous History:

Belleville’s 7-4 win in the second meeting of the season at Upstate Medical University Arena on November 1 evened the season series at 1-1-0-0. It improved the Sens’ lifetime record against the Crunch to 23-22-2-3, and 8-12-2-3 on the road in Syracuse. Wyatt Bongiovanni has three goals in two games against Syracuse this season, while Tyler Boucher and Stephen Halliday each have three assists, and Lassi Thomson has scored two times in the season series. Nick Abruzzese is the highest-scoring player against Belleville, that is still available on the Crunch roster for tonight, with a goal and an assist.

Roster Notes:

Despite a couple of players feeling the wear of the season in Ottawa, and the NHL Sens hosting the Los Angeles Kings tonight, there have been no transactions reported as of publication time, this morning. Foward Mark Duarte remains with Belleville, after signing a professional tryout from the Senators’ ECHL affiliate, the Allen Americans, earlier this week. And, the injured list remains as it did yesterday, with goaltender Mads Sogaard, forwards Garrett Pilon and Tyler Boucher, and defender Matt Andonovski all out hurt.  Full lineup details will be available via the Sens social media channels (@BellevilleSens) about half an hour ahead of puck drop.

Who to Watch:

Senators’ forward Arthur Kaliyev extended his goal-scoring streak to four games, notching his fifth over that span to give Belleville a brief lead in the third period in Utica last night. Meanwhile, Phil Daoust (one goal, four assists), Jorian Donovan (two assists), and Jamieson Rees (one goal, one assist) all have points in back-to-back games. Rookie forward Landen Hookey scored his first career AHL goal on Friday, while first-year defenceman Tomas Hamara collected his first AHL point.

Crunch forward Mitchell Chaffee has collected points in three consecutive games (one goal, two assists), including a helper in Syracuse’s 2-1 loss to Hershey at home on Friday. Former Wellington Dukes’ standout defenceman Declan Carlile scored Syracuse’s only goal last night and has three points (one goal, two assists) and seven shots over his previous two games.
