Game Day Build-Up: Dash to the holiday break begins at home to Syracuse

December 2, 2022

Dec.2/22 vs Syracuse Crunch (NHL Affiliate: Tampa Bay Lightning)

Presented by Carpenters Union Local 397

The Set-Up:

After snapping a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Laval Rocket last Saturday, which saw Antoine Bibeau turn away 49 shots to claim the franchise record for most saves in a game, the Belleville Sens will look to get the final month of 2022 off to a good start tonight. The Sens host the Syracuse Crunch at CAA Arena, for the 10th game of a 15-game stretch against divisional opponents, which Belleville has gone 5-5-0-0 on so far. Syracuse is coming off back-to-back losses at home to the Providence Bruins, falling 5-3 and 6-5 (Overtime) last weekend. Those losses follow a five-game winning streak in which the Crunch outscored opponents 35-27.

Previous History:

This is the 3rd meeting of the season between Syracuse and Belleville, with the Crunch winning both matchups so far. A late Ridly Greig tally wasn’t enough for the Sens to claw back in a 4-2 road loss on November 11, and an early Crunch flurry of four goals would lead to a 5-4 Belleville loss on November 19, at CAA Arena. Trevor Carrick leads the Crunch in scoring against Belleville this season, with one goal and three assists, while Rourke Chartier, Egor Sokolov and Cole Reinhardt have each scored one goal and one assist against Syracuse during this campaign.

Roster Notes:

It’s hoped the Senators’ offence will receive a boost as forward Viktor Lodin returns from a three-game break due to illness. Lodin has six points (three goals, three assists) in eight games so far this season, which has also been impacted by an ankle injury. With Lodin back, tryout hopeful Brandon Cutler will be scratched. Defender Lassi Thomson has also been returned from the NHL, while fellow blueliner Nikita Zaitsev was recalled to Ottawa after playing three AHL games for the Senators.

Who to Watch:

Rourke Chartier has been the most consistent Senator of late, notching eight points (four goals, four assists) over a six-game point streak. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native has been a clutch player as well, scoring three game-winning goals this season, which has him ranked 7th in the American Hockey league in that category. Goaltender Antoine Bibeau will make his 10th appearance and 6th start for Belleville, coming off his record-breaking 49-save performance last weekend.

For the Crunch, defender Darren Raddysh and forward Alex Barre-Boulet are 2nd and 3rd in the AHL points race with 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists) and 24 points (four goals, 20 assists), respectively. Barre-Boulet has had considerable success against the Senators this season, with four assists in two games played and a total of 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 19 career games against Belleville.
