Game Day Build-Up: Senators begin holiday stretch drive with weekend in Winnipeg

December 17, 2022

Dec.17/22 @ Manitoba Moose (NHL Affiliate: Winnipeg Jets)

Presented by Carpenters Union Local 397

The Set-Up:

The Belleville Senators are dashing towards the holiday break, as they begin a three-game stretch before Christmas with a weekend visit to Winnipeg, Manitoba to take on the Manitoba Moose. The weekend set marks the final two games of six-straight road games, against Canadian opponents, that’s seen Belleville split its recent visits to Toronto (3-1 L, 4-2 W) and Laval (2-1 SOW, 7-4 L). The Moose are coming off a split of their own, in Calgary against the Wranglers, which saw them win 4-1 on Tuesday and lose 3-2 on Thursday.

Previous History:

Tonight’s matchup is the 23rd lifetime meeting between the Sens and Moose, with Belleville holding a 10-9-3-0 lifetime record overall, and a 4-4-2-0 lifetime mark in Manitoba. Last season, the Senators struggled against the Moose, winning just one of four games, with Manitoba outscoring the Belleville 14-6. Belleville’s only win against the Moose in 2022-23 came on March 11, 2022, 4-3 in a shootout.

Roster Notes:

Two important pieces will return to Belleville’s lineup this afternoon, as forward Jayce Hawryluk and defender Kristians Rubins return to action. Hawryluk missed 19 games due to a hand injury and Rubins was out eight games, after injuring his leg. Forward Matt Wedman also returns from a four-game absence and will look to find his form again. Non-injured players for Belleville, who aren’t dressed today include defenders Xavier Bernard and Nick Albano, and forward Joe Carroll, who was signed to a professional tryout on Friday. The Senators are also without captain Dillon Heatherington, and alternates Jack Lucchini and Rourke Chartier, who are all currently on NHL recalls to Ottawa.

Injury Report:

No. Name Pos. Last Game Games Missed Timeline Notes
7 Viktor Lodin LW Dec.7/22 @ TOR 2 Week-to-Week Upper Body
10 Philippe Daoust C Nov.23/22 @ UTI 8 Season Ending Shoulder

34 Roby Jarventie LW Oct.29/22 @ RFD 15 Week-to-week Knee

Who to Watch:

While many fans will be keeping an eye on Jayce Hawryluk, who had four points (two goals, two assists) in five games before his injury layoff, Egor Sokolov has been the hottest Senator offensively lately. Sokolov is on a three-game assist streak and has 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in his last 15 games. He’s only failed to register a point in three of those 15 games, as he continues to develop as a more well-rounded forward.

For the Moose, forwards Jeff Mallott (two goals, one assist), Dominic Toninato (two goals, one assist), and defenceman Declan Chisholm (three assists) all have points in back-to-back games. The Moose lineup also boasts three Winnipeg first round draft picks, including Brad Lambert (30th overall in 2022), Chaz Lucius (18th overall in 2021), and Ville Heinola (20th overall in 2019), though Lucius and Heinola have missed six games and four games respectively, while Lambert didn’t play in Manitoba’s last contest.
