Game Day Build-Up: Senators vs Marlies – April 20, 2022

April 20, 2022

Presented by Carpenters Union Local 397

The Set-Up:

The Belleville Senators have found the right time to tie a season-high four-game win streak. Belleville has rattled off consecutive victories over Laval, Utica, Rochester and Hartford, to put itself in fourth place in the American Hockey League North Division standings, with four games to play, including tonight against the Toronto Marlies. The Sens haven’t been scoring much on their current streak but have used some tenacious defence and timely goaltending to get results and strengthen their playoff hopes. The Marlies have dropped out of the playoff picture into sixth place but are just .002 percentage points back of Rochester for the final playoff spot. They’re coming off a 5-1 loss to the Crunch, in Syracuse, last Saturday.

Previous History:

Belleville and Toronto have met nine times so far in 2021-22, with the Senators holding a 3-6-0-0 record against their provincial rivals. Belleville has earned just one win in four games at home and two wins in five tries at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Lifetime against Toronto, Belleville is 25-22-2-2, with a 10-14-0-1 mark at CAA Arena.

Roster Notes:

There are some significant changes coming to Bellevilles lineup, ahead of tonight’s game. Troy Mann will go with 11 forwards and seven defencemen, due to some injuries and non-COVID illness affecting a few players. Zach Senyshyn was returned from Ottawa this morning, but won’t dress tonight, after finishing a two-game road trip to the NHL’s western conference. Belleville’s other scratches include Jack Dougherty (IR), Rourke Chartier (IR), Clark Bishop (IR), Chris Wilkie and Kevin Mandolese (IR). Mads Sogaard will start for the third straight game in the Belleville net and will be backed up by Mitch Gillam. The Peterborough-native was signed to a pro try out by the Senators, from the ECHL’s Indy Fuel, on Tuesday.

Who to Watch:

Senators forward Matt Wedman had two goals last game, with Logan Shaw (one goal, two assists), Andrew Agozzino (one goal three, assists) and Scott Sabourin (one goal, one assist) all have points in back-to-back games. Egor Sokolov (four goals, three assists, eight games played), Lassi Thomson (one goal, five assists, four games played), and Agozzino (three goals, two assists, nine games played), are Belleville’s leading scorers against Toronto this season.

The Marlies have been led offensively recently by Nick Robertson. The Maple Leafs 2nd round pick in 2019 is riding a six-game point streak into tonight’s matchup (four goals, two assists) and had a helper, with four shots on goal in Toronto’s last game. Mac Hollowell is Toronto’s leading scorer against Belleville this season (two goals, eight assists), while Antti Suomela (four goals, three assists), Semyon Der Arguchintsev (three goals, four assists) and Alex Steeves (three goals, four assists), each have seven points against Belleville.
