Game Day Build-Up: Senators at Marlies – October 30, 2021

The Set-Up:

Round one of the AHL’s Battle of Ontario this season went to the Toronto Marlies, as the Belleville Sens fell 5-2 on Friday night, with Toronto scoring three times in the third period. However, the Senators have a quick chance at redemption, as they visit the Marlies at Coca-Cola Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. It’s the second of 12 meetings between the teams this season and marks Belleville’s first visit to Ontario’s capital since May 2, 2021 when the teams met at Scotiabank Arena during the pandemic shortened season. The Belleville Sens haven’t played at CCC since February 15, 2020, when they lost 7-6 in overtime. Saturday also marks the first matinee of the Senators 2021-22 schedule.

Previous History:

The Marlies made up a slight bit of ground on Belleville with their win at CAA Arena on Friday night. The Senators still hold the head-to-head advantage in their lifetime series, but that record has dropped to 22-17-2-2 and 9-12-0-1 at home. The Sens will hope their run of more success in Toronto continues, as they look to improve on their 13-5-2-1 mark at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

Roster Notes:

More roster and lineup details will be available closer to puck drop, but there is still a fairly long list of players who won’t suit up due to injury. Mads Sogaard, Lassi Thomson, Tyrell Goulbourne, Rourke Chartier and Colby Williams all missed last night’s game because they’re hurt. Mitchell Hoelscher also left last night’s game after being hit by a slap shot. Head Coach Troy Mann says Hoelscher was taken to hospital for evaluation, but there’s been no updated yet on the severity of his injuries. Mann also says he expected to start Kevin Mandolese in goal again this afternoon.

Who to Watch:

Senators veteran forward Andrew Agozzino scored twice last night and had a game-high of seven shots on goal. He’s now found the net in Belleville’s last three games and will be looked upon to continue to lead by example on Saturday. Despite the five goals against on Friday, Kevin Mandolese put forward a strong performance and will need to do so again, for Belleville to be successful.

On the Toronto side, Josh Ho-Sang scored twice in Friday night, while Joseph Duszak and Pavel Gogolev each had a pair of assists. They’ll look to continue their success along with speedy rookie forward Alex Steeves, who had an assist and five shots on goal on Friday.
