Game Day Build-Up: Senators vs Marlies – February 18, 2022

The Set-Up:

Even after having one game postponed this week the Belleville Senators kick off a busy stretch of games that will see them play four times in the next five days, starting tonight, as they welcome the Toronto Marlies to CAA Arena. The Sens will also visit the Marlies tomorrow afternoon, before hosting the Syracuse Crunch for a pair of games on Monday (3:00 p.m.) and Tuesday (7:00 p.m.). The Sens haven’t played since finishing their three-game Pennsylvania road trip last Saturday, which saw them pick up wins over Lehigh Valley (5-0), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (2-1) and a loss to Hershey (5-4). Belleville’s game against Laval, scheduled for this past Wednesday was postponed, and will be rescheduled. The Marlies are coming off a 6-2 win over the Utica Comets on Wednesday, which is part of a five-game win streak and a run of six games with at least a point.

Previous History:

The Marlies have had the B-Sens number this season, with Belleville posting just a 1-6-0-0 record so far over their first seven meetings. Belleville is 0-3-0-0 against the Marlies at home this year, and 1-3-0-0 in Toronto. Lifetime against Toronto, the Senators are 23-22-2-2 against their provincial rival and 9-14-0-1 at CAA Arena.

Roster Notes:

The Senators will once again go with 11 forwards and seven defencemen tonight. Mark Kastelic rejoins the Belleville Sens from Ottawa, while Lassi Thomson returns from a few games off due to injury and goaltender Kevin Mandolese is back from Atlanta and will back-up for Mads Sogaard, after Filip Gustavsson was recalled to Ottawa. Parker Kelly and Dillion Heatherington were also called back up to the NHL following Belleville’s Road trip last week. Other scratches for Belleville tonight include Jack Dougherty, Mitch Hoelscher (knee), Tyrell Goulbourne and Cody Goloubef and Hugo Roy.

Who to Watch:

Senators Captain Logan Shaw is riding a four-game point streak (two goals, two assists), while defenceman Zac Leslie (one goal, two assists) and Andrew Agozzino (two goals, two assists) also had a point in each of Belleville’s games last week. Egor Sokolov is also heating up of late, with six points (two goals, four assists) in his last five games played. He also had six shots on goal in Hershey on Saturday, scoring once.

For Toronto, blueliner Mac Hollowell has points in his last three games (one goal, two assists), while forward Brett Seney had three assists in Toronto’s Wednesday win over Utica and has only been held pointless in one of his last six contests. Additionally, power forward Nick Ritchie scored Wednesday in his Marlies debut, after being waived by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Capacity at CAA Arena for tonight’s game is limited to 50% (or 2,200 fans), due to the Ontario Government guidelines aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19, but tickets are available via Ticketmaster or the CAA Arena Box Office (open today 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.).
