Game Day Build-Up: Battle of Ontario caps preseason action for B-Sens this afternoon

October 6, 2024

Belleville Senators Game Day Build-Up (Preseason)
Oct.6/24 vs Toronto Marlies (NHL Affiliate: Toronto Maple Leafs)

The Set Up:

The Belleville Senators have just one more tune-up match this afternoon ahead of the new American Hockey League season, and despite being an exhibition affair, it’s a game that should garner a fair amount of attention from fans. The B-Sens welcome the provincial rival Toronto Marlies to CAA Arena today, to cap a three-day preseason series that has seen both Belleville and Toronto earn victories over another North Division foe, the Laval Rocket. It’s the last chance for prospects to either earn their spot on the AHL roster or push for more ice time, with the new campaign now under a week away.

Previous History:

Belleville had a strong season against Toronto in 2023-24, skating to a record of 6-3-0-1. Lifetime against Toronto, the B-Sens are 37-32-2-4, with a 17-18-0-3 mark at CAA Arena. The Senators and Marlies will meet 10 times in the 2024-25 season, including two games at Scotiabank Arena, home of the Marlies’ National Hockey League parent club, the Maple Leafs. The first regular season Battle of Ontario will be on Saturday October 26, when the Marlies make their first official trip to Belleville of the year.

Roster Notes:

With the NHL preseason now over, the Ottawa Senators have returned the players recalled earlier in the week. That means Angus Crookshank, Tyler Boucher, Stephen Halliday, Hayden Hodgson, Filip Roos, Cole Reinhardt, and Donovan Sebrango could all be available for Belleville this afternoon. Goaltender Mads Sogaard was also returned to the AHL this week, but there’s been no indication yet who will start in net for the B-Sens this afternoon.

Who to Watch:

Two B-Sens opened the preseason with multi-point games in Belleville’s 3-2 win over the Laval Rocket on Friday night. Forwards Wyatt Bongiovanni (one goal, one assist) and Jamieson Rees (two assists) helped to pace the attack. Winger Ryan Humphrey, in Belleville training camp on a professional tryout, also scored for the Senators, with Garrett Pilon and newcomer Xavier Bourgault chipping in with assists as well.

Toronto rookies stole the show in the Marlies’ Saturday afternoon 4-3 win over the Rocket. Centre Braeden Kressler, who signed an entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs ahead of the season, had a goal, three assists, and four shots. Fellow first-year pro hopefuls Rhett Parsons and Ty Voit each had a goal and an assist, while Brando Lisowsky rounded out the Toronto scoring on Saturday.
