Game Day Build-Up: Senators vs Marlies – October 29, 2021

The Set-Up:

A busy week continues for the Belleville Senators as they play their second of three games in four nights tonight. The rival Toronto Marlies visit CAA Arena for round one of this season’s Battle of Ontario. Belleville is coming off a decisive 7-3 win over the Rochester Americans on Wednesday, which saw Egor Sokolov register four points and Jacob Bernard-Docker score his first and second career AHL goals. Maxence Guenette also picked up his first career AHL point, with an assist. The Marlies also played on Wednesday and dropped a 5-0 decision to the Rocket in Laval. That penalty-filled affair saw 38 infractions for a total of 211 penalty minutes between both teams.

Previous History:

The Senators hold the head-to-head advantage in their lifetime series with Toronto at 22-16-2-2, but are looking to improve on their results against the Marlies at home. Belleville is 9-11-0-1 at CAA Arena but boasts a 13-5-2-1 mark at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Tonight’s matchup is the first of 12 meetings between the provincial rivals this season, with the teams meeting in Toronto again on Saturday.

Roster Notes:

Belleville is still feeling a bit of sting from recent injuries, with Mads Sogaard, Lassi Thomson, Tyrell Goulbourne and Rourke Chartier all out tonight. Cole Reinhardt suffered a minor injury in practice Thursday and won’t play either. However, the Senators do return to a more traditional 12 forward and six defender lineup. Cedric Pare draws back in up front, as does Mitchell Hoelscher and Colby Williams will sit out. Kevin Mandolese will make his third straight start in goal, backed up by Tyler Parks. In other Belleville Sens roster news, forward Philippe Daoust signed an AHL contract with the club on Wednesday, while forward Kameron Kielly was released from his pro try-out on Thursday.

Who to Watch:

Senators forward Jake Lucchini (#9) has jumped into the team scoring lead since being traded from Laval two weeks ago and has five points (three goals, two assists) in five games. He had three points (one goal, two assists) in Wednesday’s win over Rochester. Meanwhile, the line of Egor Sokolov (#13), Cole Reinhardt (#23) and Mark Kastelic (#12) combined for seven points on Wednesday and while Reinhardt won’t play tonight, his linemates will try to continue that high rate of production.

For the Marlies, rookie forward Kirill Semyonov leads the team in scoring with five points (one goal, four assists) in five games. He helped Avangard Omsk to a KHL championship in 2020-21. Brett Seney is next on Toronto’s scoring list, with four goals so far in his first season in Toronto, after playing with the Binghamton Devils from 2017 to 2021.
