First voice of the Belleville Senators retires after 51-year broadcasting career

August 8, 2025

The inaugural voice of the Belleville Senators is hanging up the microphone.

Quinte Broadcasting Sports Director Jack Miller signed off for the final time on Wednesday, after a 51-year broadcasting career that established him as the “Voice of Hockey in the Bay of Quinte”, and saw him spend time with both the Belleville Senators, and their National Hockey League parent club in Ottawa, among others.

After being hired at a station in his hometown of Cornwall, Ontario, Miller moved to Belleville and hit the airwaves on 800 AM CJBQ in September of 1974, hosting the station’s afternoon drive show. He started calling play-by-play as a fill-in on Belleville Bulls broadcasts (when the club played in the former Provincial Junior Hockey League) in 1979 and in 1981, would become CJBQ’s Sports Director, a role which he’s held until his retirement.

From 1981-onwards, Miller’s voice would bring the action of Ontario Hockey League games to Belleville Bulls fans locally, but also expanded to work on the former Global TV Game of the Week from 1988 to 2022. He also filled-in on Ottawa Senators broadcasts from 1998 to 2002, and was part of the TSN Radio coverage of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship for 13 years, through 2018.

In 2017-18, Miller would become the first voice of the Belleville Senators, calling major milestones like the club’s first goal, win, playoff push, and more. The “Voice of the Belleville Sens” through to 2022, the City of Belleville and the Sens recognized Miller’s career accomplishments at the end of the 2022 season, when the city declared April 20 that year as “Jack Miller Day” in Belleville, and renamed the CAA Arena press box in his honour.

Members of the Belleville Senators staff stopped by Quinte Broadcasting during Miller’s retirement show on Wednesday to wish him well, and presented him with a fresh Senators jersey emblazoned with the number 51, which will now become synonymous with his career.

While Jack may be leaving the local airwaves, his legacy will continue to live on at CAA Arena by way of the the Jack Miller Broadcast Booth and Media Centre, and through a new in-game feature highlighting some of the Belleville Sens most historic moments, as we prepare to celebrate 10 seasons of the AHL in the Bay of Quinte in 2026-27.
