St. Theresa Titans claim first OFSAA hockey title in overtime at CAA Arena

March 27, 2026

The 2026 OFSAA A/AA Boys Hockey Championship reached a thrilling conclusion on Thursday afternoon in Belleville, as two of the province’s top high school programs battled for gold inside CAA Arena, home of the Belleville Senators.

After three days of intense competition featuring 16 teams from across Ontario, the championship game delivered everything expected of an OFSAA final, as co-host St. Theresa Titans faced off against the Sydenham Golden Eagles, bringing high tempo, physical play, and moments of individual brilliance.

Both teams came out flying, trading early chances and establishing a playoff-level intensity right from puck drop. The opening period was tightly contested, with strong goaltending throughout, though the Titans struck first. Just under seven minutes into the first frame, forward Owen Rivers scored his third goal of the tournament to make it a 1–0 game. Late in the period, the Golden Eagles evened the playing field. Cole Rowart knotted the game at 1–1 with his first goal of the tournament, extending his point streak to three games in the process.

The middle frame went scoreless but was nothing short of competitive, as the two schools battled for every inch of the ice.

With a provincial title on the line, the third period brought another level of intensity. St. Theresa pushed hard, forcing turnovers and creating traffic in front of the net. Their persistence paid off, as Cam Shaw’s fifth goal and seventh point of the tournament put the Titans in front, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

As the clock wound down, it was Sydenham who delivered the equalizer. With under five minutes remaining, Declan Hingley fired a point shot that changed it all, as the puck slipped past goaltender Charlie Vos, tying the contest and sending it to overtime.

A back-and-forth extra period saw both schools get their chance to end the game, and with just over three minutes to go, St. Theresa capitalized. Taking advantage from the far circle, Pierson Clute scored the game-winning tally to give the Titans their first-ever OFSAA hockey championship in school history.

Post-game, Titans head coach Steve Tracze spoke about his team, as well as the Senators’ support in making the event possible. “John and Daniel, they’re great. Huge partners right from the get-go, and when we said we wanted to run this tournament, they were right on board. Providing the whole production and how well this all went is going to be a huge memory for all of these kids.” Tracze also mentioned how special it was to finally capture what had felt like an elusive championship. “We’ve been there for a number of years, and to now win gold, silver, bronze, and ‘antique bronze’ (fourth)… it was pretty special, especially to do it on home ice.”

Defender Pierson Clute, who scored the clinching goal for St. Theresa, was asked about his feelings on the win and emphasized the team effort. “It’s a great feeling. I mean, it wasn’t just me, it was the whole team. We all came together and won this as a group. The close score really reflects how strong our goaltending and defence were, with everyone contributing.”

In the end, the 2026 final was a fitting conclusion to a tournament defined by parity, skill, and determination—another memorable chapter in OFSAA hockey history.
